5 Killed As al-Shebab Bombed Mogadishu Hotel Due To Host Foreign President

SOMALIA –

Somalia’s al-Shebab armed Islamists have claimed responsibility for a suicide bomb attack on a hotel in the capital, Mogadishu, on Thursday.

At least five police officers were killed when a vehicle laden with explosives rammed into the SYL hotel, demolishing the gate and a perimeter wall, a day before Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was due to stay there.

Erdogan’s visit began on Friday and some of the Turkish delegation was already staying at the hotel, which is close to the Somali presidential palace ahead of Erdogan’s arrival

A spokesperson for al-Shebab, Sheikh Abdulaziz Abumusab, said they were targeting “apostate” security officials, including foreigners, meeting at the hotel.
