Cristiano Ronaldo has won the FIFA Ballon d’Or for the best player in the world for the third.
Soccer governing body, FIFA, presented the award to the Real Madrid player Monday during a 90-minute show at Zurich’s Kongresshaus.
Ronaldo beat Barcelona’s Lionel Messi to the award for the second successive year after receiving the most votes from a panel made up of captains and coaches of national teams and a selection of the world’s media.
German international and Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer was voted third best soccer player in the world.
In his response after being declare winner of the 21014 award, the Portugues said the moment was one of his happiest ever.
‘’ Fantastic. It was a dream come true for me. I never thought I would win three Gold Balls. Fantastic. I want to win as many as possible. It’s hard and very difficult to win. But everything is possible,’’ Ronaldo said.
Meanwhile, former award winner, Messi has described Ronaldo’s award as a ‘’deserved’’ one.
The Barcelona striker said Ronaldo has been excellent.
Germany midfielder Nadine Kessler has claimed her first-ever FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year award. Germany coach Joachim Low and compatriot Ralf Kellermann, coach of Wolfsburg Ladies, have been named as FIFA World Coaches of the Year for Men’s and Women’s Football, respectively.
