Can you feel it in the air? The cool crisp breeze, the leaves changing to the variegated colors of fall, that seem to sing, “change is here!” It’s not too hot, not too cold! The beauty of the outdoors, the smells of warm meals and treats with pumpkin and spices. The warm embraces and movies on the sofa with a blanket and cup of warm cider… it always makes me smile. I love fall!
Elsewhere, it could be Cold wind, dry air, cracked lips, and the onset of excessive ashiness, and that can only mean one thing: Harmattan has arrived! As the weather changes, so do things around us.
We all go through different phases in life, some are more favourable than others, but each of them has a purpose. God sends various seasons into our life for a reason. Yes, good and sometimes the ones we consider ‘’bad.’’ Most of us love summertime, it’s when it’s sunny and warm, people are happier and the days are longer.
Then the autumn comes and everything seems gloomier.
However, we need to know and understand that every season is so important and could be seen as “season of preparation.’’ Each season prepares us for what’s to come; cold, dry, sunny or raining.
The changing of the season is so promising. We assign hopes and promises to each season, hoping that as the seasons change something fresh and new will happen for us. That is exactly how the “Seasons of life” are. When we are young, and full of energy, we can’t wait to be the magic two digits (thirteen) that make us “mature”. When we are teenagers, we look forward to being young adults, with our declaration of independence! And, when we are young adults, we long for marriage, children and all the things we imagined would make us “happy”, only to get all of that and long for the freedom and energy of childhood!
The human spirit is insatiable! We always want and strive for more… for change!
What we really need to do is STOP! Look around, and enjoy the moment. Your surroundings, your family and friends, and simply count your blessings! Fall always reminds me to do that. The other day, as I ran out of the house to run one of my many errands, to handle some of my many adult responsibilities, something in my spirit just told me to stop for a second. As I stood under the huge oak tree in front of my house, with all its falling leaves, as I looked up and saw the leaves changing colors, and felt that cool breeze blow on my face, I took a deep breath of fresh air, stood there, it was AS if God himself told me to slow down and just… BE!
I stood there, thinking about where I was this time last year, five years ago and even how I have been able to enjoy the fall for fifteen years now, with all the beautiful colors, the cool crisp breeze, the smell of warm meals and treats with pumpkin and spices baking in the oven. As I stood there, I whispered “thank you!” Thank you for reminding me how blessed I am, how far I’ve come! In that short three minutes under that oak, I was overwhelmed with gratefulness!
And then, it came to me, that is the reason I love fall so much! It always reminds me to stop, and appreciate my journey, to count my blessings to be grateful, and say, Thank you!
