A number of disgruntled Lawmakers Thursday forced their way and smuggled embattled Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal into the National Assembly after overpowering security agents, who attempted to prevent the Speaker from gaining entrance into the complex.
Angered by what they considered as ‘’harassment’’ by the ruling party, after being subjected to serious of scrutiny as they make their way to the House, the lawmakers, mostly members of the opposition party, All Progressive Congress, APC, jumped through the fence as they forced their ways in, damaging the gate in the process.
Tambuwal, who abandoned his car half-way through the complex, also left his convoy behind as walked to the last gate, accompanied by his loyalists in their numbers.
Our correspondent reports that Police fired teargas canisters at the aggrieved lawmakers, some of whom fainted in the process.
In a chat with journalists after the incident, spokesman Alhaji Lai Mohammed said Tambuwa confirmed the treatment he received in the hands of the security agents, who apparently were under instructions from above.
He noted that the country is being ridiculed in the eyes of the world.
“The Speaker reconvened the House at the instance of the President who wrote a letter to the Speaker asking for an extension of the state of emergency in three states and now he is being ambushed and not allowed in, it is a sad development for our country’’ Mohammed said.
“There must be limit to impunity and we are being ridiculed in the eyes of the world,”
Acoording to the APC spokesman, House of Representatives deputy Speaker, Emeka Ihedioha had been allowed to enter the complex while the Speaker (Tambuwal) was being prevented from getting close to the edifice.
It would be recalled that Tambuwal defected to opposition APC ON October 28, a move that angered the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
