Soldiers have been deployed to Okrika, Rivers State, after unidentified gunmen marred political campaign rally of the All Progressive Congress –APC, in Rivers State on Saturday.
Eyewitness said explosive devices suspected to be dynamite were used during the attack.
The gunmen stormed venue of the rally at about 3:45 pm, when the ground was being set up and started shooting indiscriminately, eyewitness said.
Rivers State Police Commissioner, Dan Bature who confirmed the incident at a press briefing in Port Harcourt, said the attack has heightened tension in the state.
His words: “This incident has heightened tension and from our assessment, the situation has the capability of degenerating to a situation where the protection of lives and property would be threatened.’’
“Consequently, the command has advised the All progressives Congress –APC, to reschedule the really for another day, where better arrangement can be put in place.
“All political parties are hereby warned to adhere strictly to the code of conduct guiding political activities in the state,” Bature said.
