PDP Postpones Edo Primary

THE primary election of the Peoples Democratic Party – PDP, in Edo State will not hold as scheduled this week, the party has announced.

The election originally scheduled for this Friday (June 19 and 20) will now take place on Tuesday, June 23 and Wednesday, June 24.

A source told 24/7 INQUIRER that the leadership of the PDP in Edo State agreed to shift the date in order to create time for Governor Godwin Obaseki, who recently defected to the party from the All Progressives Congress – APC, to put himself together and participate in the state’s primaries.

It would be recalled that the embattled Governor Obaseki had met top members of the opposition party, both at local and national level, a move that has triggered insinuation that he (Obaseki) might contest in the September election under the PDP umbrella.

Obaseki voluntarily left the APC, following what appeared to be irreconcilable differences with the suspended National Chairman of the party, Adams Oshiomhole.

He announced his departure from the APC during a chat with journalists after meeting with President Muhammadu Buhai at the Aso Villa earlier this week.
